A month or so ago my Step-daughter came home with a jug of protein {pictured}. She had decided to go vegetarian and her BM was feeding her these shakes to up her protein.

There are several reasons why these things are NOT good for you and especially why they are not good for children.
As her BM has convinced her that not eating meat puts you in a “bad mood” {more like the least she is like me or her father the better her BM’s mood} at the very least I am thankful that she is {most likely} not poisoning her with these things anymore.
Here’s what you need to know about these “cheat” foods and why it is imperative that we all hit the kitchen with gusto and consume whole foods with a TONNE of protein – after all, protein-rich foods are everywhere. Meat is NOT your only option!!

My Biggest issue
This is a COSTCO product. Why don’t we like that fact? Well, like all Mega chains they have wishy-washy ethics to increase buying power. This means a lot of crushing the little guy and a lot of caselot buying from businesses that are downright dirty – GlaxosmithKline, Johnson, Unilever etc…
Do you own research however, Costco is on total boycott in our world.

These “nutrition supplements” are filled with highly processed animal proteins, chemicals, preservatives and additives. Not all processed foods are detrimental to our health BUT understanding what is in this shake is critical in determining whether or not to use it, replace it, or ditch the entire idea all together.

Something you might find in a pre-mixed shake or powder is(Muscle Milk being the guiltiest offender of all) heavy metal…not the good kind….things like Cadmium:

Cadmium raises special concern because it accumulates in and can damage the kidneys, the same organs that can be damaged by excessive protein consumption. And it can take 20 years for the body to eliminate even half the cadmium absorbed today.” This is a highly toxic metal, and while there are some cases where decisions have to be weighed against relative risks, accepting that you have to be exposed to any cadmium at all in your protein drink after your workout is definitely not one of them,” says Michael Harbut, M.D., director of the Environmental Cancer Initiative at the Karmanos Cancer Institute in Royal Oak, Mich.

“When these toxic heavy metals are combined in a product that is marketed for daily use, that raises serious public health concerns, especially for pregnant women, children, and young adults,” says Burns, who has been a toxicology consultant to state and federal government agencies.

Acesulfame Potassium or Acesulfame K 

The artificial sweetener you find in this particular drink. Two rat studies suggest that the additive might cause cancer. In addition it is mentioned that large doses of acetoacetamide (a breakdown product of this sugar) have been shown to affect the thyroid in rats, rabbits, and dogs.

Wheyeeet a minute!

Most whey protein is ultra-pasteurized from conventional milk full of growth hormones and antibiotics. The whey is acid processed and stripped of all of it’s alkalizing minerals (which include vitamins and minerals that we are all in need of). If you don’t balance the acidic state caused in your body by de-alkalized foods you will increase vulnerability to degenerative disease.

Eating a variety of food provides more than enough protein for the average person – leave the protein supplements to the very malnourished and the bodybuilding set. 

If you’re part of the bodybuilding set (as I am) there are a tonne of healthy choices for you that don’t include all of the crappy ingredients found in these US made, Costco sold packs of shame.

My choice: Iron Vegan

If you’re thinking that you could be low on protein, try making a minimal ingredient nut butter smoothie or choose some real food sources of protein:

Meat – beef, pork, poultry, eggs, yogurt, cheese, fish. Choose ethical, choose organic, choose hormone free. Be wary of mollusks and shellfish. Read meat can be left out entirely for heart health.

Vegetarian sources of protein – legumes (dry beans, lentils, and peas), nuts and seeds (almond butter, sunflower seeds, hemp seeds), whole grains (oatmeal, quinoa, brown rice, pasta), dark leafy vegetables, avocado.

Winter travel season is here and it’s time to get ready to hit the road AND be #fitontheroad. This includes keeping your skin safe from the elements…..and your abs safe from over indulgence.

I am writing a quick post (after a request from my Winter Reboot group) to outline my favourite/highly recommended self-tanners.

I am a sun baby, worship that thing like it’s going out of style BUT I rarely (if ever) use a tanning bed. Spray tan for competition etc…

The tanners I’ve used for competition are NOT friendly for your body or environment and are of course, ridiculously expensive.

While I don’t usually use these things (because regardless of how they are applied I suck at it) there are a few brands that seem to actually deliver on the non-orange front. These ones also have the highest quality ingredients you can find in a sunless tanner.

Hard to find in Canada? Yes. Your best bet is to order online.

If you’re brave enough to try them out on your own here are tree recommendations from me:

True Natural – organic product

Vita Tanz – these guys boast free radical protection.

Chocolate Sun – if you hate the smell of spray tans, these guys found the magical chocolate code to expel that.

As always, make sure you’re applying sun screen regularly when you’re out in the tropics. While the sun up here in Canada is far more cancer-causing, getting burned is never fun.

The big “O”

Leading an informed lifestyle can be torturous. Not only do you come upon a tonne of information that both shocks and appals you but, conflicting stories and opinions can start you into a tailspin of confusion about what ethical and heart-based decisions you can make.

Fear not, the quick answer to this is to not beat yourself up about it. You can only do so much, and caring about slow food, farm to table and small-time community initiatives (CSA’s, Farmers Markets, Eating in season…) are a great place to start.

Organics are tricky because, like most things, once the “big boys” get ahold of terms like green, local, organic etc…they start to bastardize their intended meaning…leaving us all, well, throwing our hands up in the air.

While I try not to beat myself over the head with info, I definitely like to keep a personal mandate of NOT supporting big business, especially big agribusiness and big pharma.

I found the chart below exceptionally helpful when trying to weed out “bad” organics from my very saintly regular grocery shops. Hope you find it helpful too!

Recipe for Disappointment – wildcrafting

This winter I was contacted by a magazine for an interview on wild foraging in the Canadian Rockies. Needless to say, I was thrilled to be able to put together my thoughts on wildcrafting and put forth some ideas on sustainable foraging for the local mountain curious & cultured to peruse through.

I completed a 1 hour interview where ideas on how to, where to and what to forage for in this micro-climate of Alberta were discussed. I shared a great recipe (which is here for you in the photo) and knew that my web info, picture and 500 word or less article would appear in the summer issue of this mountain culture magazine.

I searched and search and subscribed to the magazine to ensure that I would get a copy to keep for myself. To no avail. When I finally attended a concert in Banff this past weekend, I managed to scoop one up at a local outdoors store.

I plucked up the magazine and lined up for breakfast, frantically thumbing the pages to reach “my” article. What I saw made my heart sink. I was SO excited to see my face and words on the page. Instead, I saw what you’re looking at. A full page for my recipe and a small tag with virtually nothing about me inserted in it.

I wont go overboard and say I was devastated, but I was kind of beside myself with confusion on how the article seemed to have gotten cut…and why I wasn’t advised. Hmpf.

Most publications I have been featured in would have handled this differently, I felt……embarrassed that I had be so stoked and felt like I amounted to NOTHING. Later on in the weekend Jeff went on to say that he was proud of me that I got into a magazine at all, and that I should be happy.

I have to agree with him. I do. Sometimes the old performer in me just wants that moment in the sun. When the lights aren’t as bright as I’d hoped, they might as well be off!

Not very grateful, not very positive. Time to work on that, right?

Durian, the King of fruit


After a recent Anti-Aging Balanced Wellness Retreat, where I brought a Durian for everyone to share, some questions were raised that I was not prepared to answer.

I knew a few things about Durian, but nothing in specific, so as I promised – here is the breakdown of what I have learned about Durian as of today!

As luck would have it my intuition must’ve known that this fruit is considered an anti-oxidant. Brilliant for fighting free radicals and cell destruction in the body – a major helper in the aging department.

These fruits are allowed to ripen on the tree and then are harvested at their most ripe, once they have fallen to the ground. They are either eaten raw or even boiled and enjoyed as a veggie. Once you peel the fruit open from the obvious “line” down the middle you will notice several pods or compartments that house up to 5 mushy, pulpy edible goodness – pudding I tell ya, pudding.

The Durian I most recently ate was smaller in size, and was not an A-typical one. It didn’t stink, taste like onion or make me or anyone gag. Google it, cause that’s what you’ll see on youtube read in articles. You can watch my video here if you like.

In terms of dietary information there are some amazing things Durian has going for it:

1 – High in Vitamins B,C,E and Iron
2 – Roots used in medicine to cure jaundice or fever
3 – Poultices can be created from fruit and leaves for swelling and skin disease
4 – lowers cholesterol
5 – blood cleaner
6 – source of raw fats

And as if THAT weren’t enough. This thing is loaded with Tryptophan, the amino acid responsible for increasing serotonin levels and helping with mood disorders, anxiety, depression and insomnia.

Icing on the cake? This spiny awkward south Asian delight is considered to be an aphrodisiac – MEOW.

So c’mon, give a Durian a chance.

OH! I almost forgot. YES, organic Durian is hard to find however, if you google it, it is available directly from Malaysia (Karak).

Summer Camp for Adults

Good morning all of you interweb savvy people. By the way, thank you very much for following me here and on Facebook and Twitter.

I realize it has been some time since I have blogged, and there are many reasons why. I thought you may like to know!

1 – It’s motorcycle season, yippee!
2 – It’s “sort of” summer here in BC
3 – Camping/Hiking season
4 – Gardening – holy schnikees, it’s been booming
5 – Joint ventures are in full swing
6 – Beach days are here
7 – Working on honing my Thai Yoga Massage skills and completing my certification

The list goes on and on.

I started to realize that I was burying myself in my business, which I love, but was becoming all consuming. It became more important to me to meet people, travel more, see my family and friends and relax. So this is what I’ve been doing!

Just last night I decided to take a long ride on my motorcycle, enjoy some Green Tea and Raw Spinach Salad, cruising the farmlands, driving by old high school haunts. The night was amazing. I urge you all to take some time out, reflect, relax and rejoice, it’s summer!

September will be a busy month as well, I am lucky enough to be able to visit Morocco and Spain for a few weeks, traveling through previously unseen countryside and adding to my bucket list of “The Wonders of the World” – my goal is to see all Natural, Man made, and some Ancient before my time here is up.

With my intention continually focused on health and wellness I leave you with a reminder to feed your body right.

EMF Waves – A real danger?


There is a massive push on the sale of grounding equipment of late. This type of thing always puts my gimmick radar into overdrive because if there is one thing I detest, it’s being ripped off.

While I am not a scientist, nor do I claim to be one, I figure that with enough reading I can come to some pretty fair conclusions on products and services that all of my clientele and fellow Wellness advocates can surely benefit from.

Here goes nothing……..

Electromagnetic fields (EMF) come from a variety of sources. Power lines, home wiring, airport and military radar, substations, transformers, computers and appliances. These waves have been linked (although reported as “casually”) to the cause brain tumors, leukemia, birth defects, miscarriages, chronic fatigue, headaches, cataracts, heart problems, stress. nausea, chest pain, forgetfulness, cancer and other health problems.

Many have chosen to write about the possibility of serious health concerns as a result of exposure to EMF’s since the 80’s in such publications as Time Magazine, The Wall Street Journal and Business Week. Ted Koppel and Dan Rather also have reported on the subject. Lately, more attention has been brought to the subject by the up and comers of the Wellness industry.

In addition to the long-term health concerns, buying a house with high fields will be an economic disaster. In a few years, when power line radiation is as well known as asbestos and radon, a house with high fields will be practically impossible to sell. Currently there are hundreds of lawsuits regarding EMFs and property devaluation in the United States.

EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) Says the Threat Is Real

In a draft report issued in March 1990, the EPA recommended that EMFs be classified as a Class B carcinogen — -a “probable human carcinogen and joined the ranks of formaldehyde, DDT, dioxins and PCBs. Reportedly after review by utility, military and computer lobbyists, the EPA’s final revision did NOT classify EMFs as a Class B carcinogen Rather, the following explanation was added:”

At this time such a characterization regarding the link between cancer and exposure to EMFs is not appropriate because the basic nature of the interaction between EMFs and biological processes leading to cancer is not understood.”

No real conclusion here…but can we truly KNOW that outside pressures stopped the EPA from speaking out?

SOURCES OF EMF

Power Lines

All power lines radiate electromagnetic fields. The question is: how much are the power lines near YOUR home radiating? The amount of EMFs coming from a power line depends on its particular configuration. Power companies know which power line configurations are best for reducing EMFs but most don’t feel the evidence supports costly changes in the way they deliver electricity.

Substations

A substation is an assemblage of circuit breakers, disconnecting switches and transformers designed to substations have been blamed for causing cancer clusters among nearby residents. Paul Brodeur wrote about several such cancer clusters in the July 9, 1990 issue of the New Yorker Magazine.

Transformers

EMFs near a transformer can be quite high, but due to its small structure, the field strength diminishes rapidly with distance, as it does from any point source. For this reason, having a transformer located near your home is usually not a major source of concern, although just to make sure, everyone should measure the field strength around it.

Home Wiring

If your home has high EMF readings, it is important to determine the sources of the EMF so that remedial action can be taken, if possible. Many times a particular room will have a higher EMF reading. Check to see if the electricity is coming into the house on the wall outside that room. When this is the case, it is usually a good idea to block off that room and only use it for storage purposes.

Sometimes, the source of a high magnetic field is incorrect wiring. If you suspect that your home is wired improperly, obtain the services of a licensed electrician. Warning: Do not touch electric wires, even if you think the current is turned off. If you need to disconnect electrical circuits to determine the source of magnetic fields, you should call a licensed electrician.

Computers

Computers are a complicated subject. Know this: EMFs radiate from all sides of the computer. Thus, you must not only be concerned with sitting in front of the monitor but also if you are sitting near a computer or if a computer is operating in a nearby room.

Electric Blankets and Waterbeds

Electric blankets create a magnetic field that penetrates about 6-7 inches into the body. Thus it is not surprising that an epidemiological study has linked electric blankets with miscarriages and childhood leukemia.

Electric Clocks

If you are using a bedside clock, you are probably sleeping in an EMF equivalent to that of a powerline Studies have linked high rates of brain tumors with chronic exposure to magnetic fields, so it is wise to place all clocks and other electrical devices (such as telephones and answering devices) at least 6 feet from your bed.

Fluorescent Lights

Fluorescent lights produce much more EMFs than incandescent bulbs.

Microwave Ovens and Radar

Microwave ovens and radar from military installations and airports emit two types of radiation — microwave and ELF.

Telephones and Answering Machines

Telephones can emit surprisingly strong EMFs, especially from the handset. This is a problem because we hold the telephone so close to our head.

Electric Razors and Hair Dryers

Electric razors and hair dryers emit EMFs as high as 200 to 400 mg.

CONCLUSION:

Look, I don’t have a Gauss meter, and they are pretty expensive but I recommend you do your own research. Does “grounding” yourself truly cancel the risks of exposure? Sure, it’s possible. But do your research for yourself first.

Electricity is an inseparable part of our modern day society. This means that EMFs will continue to be all around us. Is there a consequence to some of the modern conveniences we have? Absolutely. The automobile is destroying the planet after all.

Most experts agree that limited, non-chronic exposure to EMFs is not a threat. For example, it is probably acceptable for a person to be near a toaster in the morning.

This being said, it is not advisable for a person to sleep under an electric blanket, up close, live near a powerline/substation, and sleep in a room where the power enters the home. This person is under an extreme case of chronic exposure. This condition, unfortunately, applies to millions of Americans.

In short, don’t sit too close to your TV set. Distance yourself at least 6 feet away. Use a Gauss meter to help you decide where it is safe to sit/sleep/stand/breathe/eat and poop if you feel it is necessary.
